The internet has become an indispensable tool for gathering and distributing information. The multitude of websites have have diverse types and amounts of information that can be used for analysis. The ability to pull or scrape data from websites is a useful skill for gather different types of information and also helps connect routes of exploration when considering lines of reason and arguments.
Wikipedia is a familiar internet based reference source. The website can be a good starting point for many different lines of investigation. This data can be accessed with free software tools and used for subsequent analysis. This module, mapping global petroleum spills, will use the R statistical analysis software to scrape oil spill data from the Wikipedia List of Oil Spills page. The data will be used to map the locations and the reported amounts of petroleum of both spills underway and those considered complete.
